Joan Rivers 'resting comfortably' in hospital, daughter says

(CNN) Comedian Joan Rivers is resting comfortably in a New York hospital after apparently suffering cardiac and respiratory arrest during a procedure at a medical clinic Thursday.

Her daughter, Melissa Rivers, issued a statement Thursday night after arriving at the hospital following a flight from Los Angeles.

I want to thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support for my mother. She is resting comfortably and is with our family. We ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers, she said.

A law enforcement official told CNN that Rivers stopped breathing during throat surgery. Rivers, 81, was taken by ambulance in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

The clinic address given by a New York Fire Department spokesman is a building that houses an endoscopy clinic where doctors perform minor procedures on patients. The clinic is a mile away from the hospital.

This morning, Joan Rivers was taken to the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where she is being attended to, hospital spokesman Sid Dinsay said in a statement. Her family wants to thank everybody for their outpouring of love and support. We will provide an update on her condition as it becomes available.

Rivers had been scheduled to perform her comedy act at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey, Friday night.

Michael Lucas, who was in the audience for Rivers show at New Yorks Beechman Theater Wednesday night, told CNN that she joked about death.

She said, You know Im 81 years old, and I could drop dead at any moment and you would be so lucky because you will have a story to tell your friends for the rest of your life,' Lucas said. Then she mimicked people talking about what it was like to see her drop dead on stage.

Rivers was in fine form, he said. There was no sign (Wednesday) night that she was declining. Her show was over an hour long and she never stumbled or even paused to catch her breath.

In 2013, Rivers allowed cameras to record a health scare for her and her daughters reality show, Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best?

Rivers said on the show that doctors found a spot on an X-ray after she had a persistent cough.

Were just not going to be sad about this, Rivers said during the episode. Were gonna do jokes and be up until we know. Thats how I deal with things. Im not just gonna sit around the next couple of days and go crazy.

Rivers has been open about her health issues. She was diagnosed with osteoporosis in 2002 after a fall down some stairs left her with broken bones, and she became an advocate for screenings for women.

She also admitted to not being as healthy as she could be.

I try not to be, but Im a terrible eater, she said. I wish I could say I eat super-healthy, but I dont. I love junk food it should be its own food group so I help my bones with supplements and medicine.

Taylor Swift captivated the MTV Video Music Awards audience with an energetic performance of her latest summer single, Shake It Off.

Clad in a sparkling two-piece dress that revealed her midriff, the 24-year-old hit-maker showed off her slim physique - and stamina - as she danced about the stage with her army of back-up dancers.

Introduced by her 17-year-old friend Lorde, Taylor's movement-heavy performance began with the singer lying upon the floor of the stage beside her tuxedo-clad dancers.

Sony's PlayStation Network targeted in attack

Sony confirmed its PlayStation Network is down due to an outside attempt to "overwhelm" the electronics giant's online service, part of a bizarre tale that includes the flight of Sony Online's president being diverted for security reasons.

In a statement released Sunday, Sony revealed that the company's PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network were hit by "an attempt to overwhelm our network with artificially high traffic." Sony says the company is working to restore PSN service as soon as possible.

"Although this has impacted your ability to access our network and enjoy our services, no personal information has been accessed," says Sony in the statement.

Sony Online Entertainment chief John Smedley confirmed its network was targeted by a distributed denial of service (DDOS) attack, an external attempt at clogging servers and making services unavailable to their users.

A group called Lizard Squad claimed credit for the attack through Twitter. They also claimed credit for similar attacks on World of Warcraft developers Blizzard Entertainment and Riot Games, the makers of League of Legends.

The group also sent a tweet from their account to American Airlines saying Smedley's flight from Dallas/Fort Worth to San Diego had explosives on board. Smedley confirmed his flight was diverted in a subsequent tweet.

Michelle Mohr, an American Airlines spokeswoman, confirmed that Flight 362 from Dallas/Fort Worth to San Diego was diverted to Phoenix "due to a security-related issue."

She said the plane, a Boeing 757 with 179 passengers and six crew members on board, landed safely at 11:57 a.m. Phoenix time and was "met by authorities" there.

The plane was still in Phoenix, she said, but American Airlines was moving to get the passengers to their destination. "Of course we're going to accommodate our customers and get them to San Diego," she said.

Mohr referred further questions to the Phoenix office of the FBI.

This is not the first time Sony's online network for PlayStation devices has been shut down by outside forces. In 2011, PSN was out for more than a month after hackers compromised the service, exposing personal data and credit card information from 77 million accounts.

At the time, the PSN breach was considered among the biggest ever, according to security experts.

St. Louis Cops Shoot and Kill Man Near Ferguson, Crowd Gathers

Two St. Louis city police officers shot and killed a black man who came within several feet of them brandishing a knife on Tuesday a few miles from the turbulent suburb of Ferguson, authorities said.

A crowd of at least 100 people quickly gathered at the scene. Some people chanted, Hands up! Dont shoot! the refrain from a week of protests over the police killing of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, three miles away.

The man in the St. Louis shooting, 23, had taken energy drinks and a package of pastries from a nearby convenience store, Police Chief Sam Dotson told reporters. He said that the man was acting erratically, walking back and forth, up and down the street.

The chief said that the officers repeatedly ordered the man to drop the knife and drew their weapons after he did not drop it. The chief said the man told the police: Shoot me now. Kill me now.

He said the two officers fired after the man moved toward one of them and came within 3 to 4 feet.

One of the witnesses described it as a suicide by cop, Dotson said.

There was a heavy police presence at the scene, and police marked off the intersection with yellow tape. Antonio French, a St. Louis alderman who was arrested last week during protests over the Brown killing, urged the crowd to maintain peace.

The last thing we need is violence in our neighborhood, he said. And thats not going to be on the police to make sure theres not violence in our neighborhood, thats going to be on us. No silliness here.

He said that he had much more confidence in St. Louis city police than in Ferguson police, and promised to work with the department to make sure there was not a heavy-handed response to any protests.

In Ferguson, protesters were confronted by a government that quickly treated them like the enemy, French told NBC affiliate KSDK.

I think we have a different situation here, handled much better, he said. This is not Ferguson.

The police shooting of Brown on Aug. 9 in Ferguson touched off more than a week of protests and clashes between police and demonstrators. Gov. Jay Nixon ordered the National Guard in on Monday to back up the state Highway Patrol and local police, and officials said the soldiers would be on patrol again Tuesday night.

Dotson said the tensions in Ferguson were on his mind.

I think anyone who has been watching television over the last week has to be concerned. ... I think its important people understand what happened, he said.

The chief stayed on the scene after the shooting, talking to people who gathered, some of whom angrily shouted questions at him. He said police were examining video and asking anyone else with video to come forward.

I have three scooters, each with a different rear stem box and each having different compensation and disadvantages. I think this one is my favourite since it's very arresting, has the built-in brake set alight (which I place of safeguard't collectively yet), is practically well-built and is a very good size (not too big, not too small). I bought this for my 08 KLR 650. Rather than use the two adapter brackets, I was able to drill and tap two holes in the KLR's rack, which for me was greatly easier and neater than before a live audience around with all that hardware. Installation was super easy and only took a only just any minutes. Comes with all the brackets and screws with the intention of you would need. The tweet was retweeted over 300,000 times, which, according to The Independent, means as many as 69 million people may have seen it. Many of the Academy's followers appreciated what seemed to be a positive reflection on Williams' life, but some users took issue with message:

While someone who is not suicidal might look at the picture of the genie and find comfort, someone whose mind is weighed heavy by depression may see something dangerously different."

Soon after Williams' death was announced on Monday, Fox News host Shepard Smith referred to the late comedian as a "coward."

In a segment on Fox News (video), Smith said:

"It's hard to imagine, isn't it? You could love three little things so much, watch them grow, they're in their mid-20s, and they're inspiring you, and exciting you, and they fill you up with the kind of joy you could never have known. And yet, something inside you is so horrible or you're such a coward or whatever the reason that you decide that you have to end it. Robin Williams, at 63, did that today."

The backlash against Smith was furious on Twitter:

Mediaite reached out to Smith, who made this heartfelt apology:

"I was just wondering aloud what could have made this man want to end it all. And it reminds us that we all have responsibility as friends and neighbors to help take responsibility to prevent this from happening. ...

"If any of his family members and friends were to have seen me use the word 'coward,' I would be horrified. I would just to apologize to the end of the earth to anyone who might think that I meant to openly call him a coward. To the core of my being, I regret it. It just came out of my mouth. And I'm so sorry. And to anyone and their families who see that, I am sorry."

But not everyone is apologizing and sending messages of support. Some Twitter users have sent cruel messages to Williams' daughter, Zelda Williams, prompting her to quit social media, at least temporarily.

According to E! Online, two Twitter users sent Zelda Williams altered images of her father that disturbed her enough to decide to stop using the social network.

"Deleting this from my devices for a good long time, maybe forever. Time will tell. Goodbye," Zelda tweeted.

She also announced that she was resigning from Instagram, and asked people not to use the Williams' family accounts to mine for photos of her father:

"I will be leaving this account for a but while (sic) I heal and decide if I'll be deleting it or not. In this difficult time, please try to be respectful of the accounts of myself, my family and my friends. Mining our accounts for photos of dad, or judging me on the number of them is cruel and unnecessary."

In a statement on Tuesday, Zelda kept it lighthearted when addressing those saying negative things about her father, E! reported.

"As for those who are sending negativity, know that some small, giggling part of him is sending a flock of pigeons to your house to poop on your car. Right after you've had it washed. After all, he loved to laugh, too."

Robin Williams died Monday in the bedroom of his California home. Sheriff's officials revealed that he committed suicide by hanging himself with a belt. The actor had also cut both of his wrists.
