CNN exclusive: Rancher says he's not racist, still defiant over grazing battle

  • NEW: Bundy says he is "not tired of talking about race"
  • The Nevada rancher has battled U.S. government over his cattle grazing free on public land
  • He came under fire after suggesting blacks may have been better off as slaves
  • "We need to get over this prejudice stuff," he says

(CNN) -- Cliven Bundy -- the Nevada rancher turned conservative folk hero for bucking the federal government's attempts to stop his cattle from grazing on public land -- admits he doesn't understand the bipartisan uproar over his comments suggesting blacks might have been better off under slavery.

But in a contentious interview Friday on CNN's "New Day," Bundy stood by his remarks, saying he's not a racist but only somebody who speaks his mind, perhaps using politically incorrect language.

"Maybe I sinned, and maybe I need to ask forgiveness, and maybe I don't know what I actually said, but when you talk about prejudice, we're talking about not being able to exercise what we think. ... If I say Negro or black boy or slave, if those people cannot take those kind of words and not be (offended), then Martin Luther King hasn't got his job done yet," he told anchor Chris Cuomo on Friday, adding, "We need to get over this prejudice stuff."

Bundy brought up civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, who was arrested in December 1955 for not giving up her seat on a public bus to a white man. The arrest sparked the Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott.

King would have wanted Parks to sit anywhere on a bus, according to Bundy. The 67-year-old added: "I want her to sit anywhere in the bus, and I want to sit next to her anywhere in the bus."

Bundy: I want what MLK wantedBundy defends comments on raceBundy: 'I might be a welfare queen'Bundy: I believe in federal government

In one exchange with Cuomo, Bundy said, "I don't know how to talk about these ethnic groups. ..."

"Then don't," Cuomo said.

For two decades, Bundy's cattle have fed off government-owned land without paying grazing fees like thousands of other ranchers. He claims he won't do business with the federal government because, in his view, the Constitution doesn't say Americans can't use land owned by the federal government. He said he'd be willing to talk with state and local authorities..

"I'll be damned if this is the property of the United States. They have no business here," he said on "New Day."

"This is a sovereign state, the sovereign state of Nevada. The federal government has nothing to do with public land in Nevada." He said other ranchers are as frustrated as he is.

This stance made him a darling of some conservatives in the media and Republican circles upset over what they've deemed government overreach. Militiamen rallied by the side of the 67-year-old rancher as federal rangers tried to force him off his land.

Bundy won that standoff, but he didn't stop talking.

Speaking to reporters over the weekend, he recalled driving by a public housing project in North Las Vegas, Nevada, and seeing "at least a half-dozen (black) people sitting on the porch, they didn't have nothing to do."

"Because they were basically on government subsidy, so now what do they do?" he added in comments first reported by The New York Times and later seen on video. "They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton.

"And I've often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn't get no more freedom. They got less freedom."

The remarks have since gone viral, drawing widespread condemnation from Democrats and Republicans alike. The rancher said he doesn't feel "abandoned" by the uproar by the likes of right-wing radio firebrand and Fox News host Sean Hannity, who has ripped what he called the "ignorant, racist, repugnant, despicable comments."

Sen. Rand Paul, who originally supported Bundy's case, issued a statement Thursday decrying Bundy's racial comments.

"His remarks on race are offensive and I wholeheartedly disagree with him," said the Kentucky Republican, who's considering a 2016 presidential run.

Cliven Bundy: Another conservative folk hero exposes racial nerve

GOP Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada earlier called Bundy's supporters "patriots." But on Thursday, the senator's office said he "completely disagrees with Mr. Bundy's appalling and racist statements."

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, who had not weighed in on the land dispute, said Bundy's words were "beyond the pale."

Politicians denounce Bundy's racist remarks

On Thursday, in an exclusive interview with CNN's Bill Weir, Bundy was asked to elaborate on his remarks. He explained he'd been simply "wondering whether (blacks) are that much better off in the situation we're in now."

He backtracked somewhat, insisting he "didn't really mean it to compare (African-Americans' current plight) with slavery. I meant to compare it with maybe life on the farm or life in the South, where they had some chickens and the gardens, and they had something to do."

At the same time, Bundy stood by his general premise that blacks once had better lives -- stating that, right now, "they don't have nothing to do with their children, their family unit is ruined. ... That's what I was referring to. I don't think they have the life that they should have" because of the government.

How did he arrive at these generalizations?

"I feel that, because I see that," Bundy explained. He said, "I don't think I'm wrong. I think I'm right."

Weir at one point challenged the Nevada rancher about whether he was any more or less a "welfare queen" since his cattle have been feeding off the government, literally, by eating grass on public land.

Bundy's response: "I might be a welfare queen. But I'll tell you I'm producing something for America and using a resource that nobody else would use or could use. I'm putting red meat on the table."

On Friday, the Bundy Ranch Facebook page elaborated on the rancher's "New Day" comments. The post concluded with these sentences:

"I am doing the same thing Rosa Parks did -- I am standing up against bad laws which dehumanize us and destroy our freedom. Just like the Minutemen at Lexington and Concord, we are saying no to an oppressive government which considers us to be slaves rather than free men.

"I invite all people in America to join in our peaceful revolution to regain our freedom. That is how America was started, and we need to keep that tradition alive."

In a press conference later Friday, Bundy added that while he is "tired" personally he is "not tired of talking about race."

"It's time the United States had a discussion about race," he said. "... I think all races should be talking about this, having their opinions and defending their liberties."

CNN's Joe Sterling and Jason Hanna contributed to this report.

Avril Lavigne Scoffs at Video Controversy: 'RACIST??? LOLOLOL!!!'

Avril Lavigne Scoffs at Video Controversy: 'RACIST??? LOLOLOL!!!'

"I love Japanese culture and I spend half of my time in Japan," tweets singer

By

Following accusations that her latest video "Hello Kitty" objectifies Japanese culture, Avril Lavigne has responded on Twitter: "RACIST??? LOLOLOL!!! I love Japanese culture and I spend half of my time in Japan.I flew to Tokyo to shoot this video specifically for my Japanese fans, with my Japanese label, Japanese choreographers and a Japanese director in Japan."

Avril Lavigne's "Imagine" and the Worst Cover Songs of All Time, as Picked by Rolling Stone Readers

The pop star released the video for the EDM-tinged track "Hello Kitty," which she wrote with husband Chad Kroeger of Nickelback fame, on Monday. The song features Lavigne singing the Japanese word for "cuteness" before a chorus that goes, "Hello Kitty, you're so silly." In the video, Lavigne freaks out with mock excitement while being served sushi and sake in between clips of the singer walking around Tokyo. A quartet of Japanese backup dancers flank the singer, with that and other scenes raising eyebrows on the Internet.

Earlier this week, speculation grew that YouTube had pulled the official video off their site. A spokesperson for Lavigne tellsRolling Stone that the video was never officially posted to YouTube so as to not to conflict with a VEVO premiere and that any removals were from fans ripping the video and posting it to YouTube.

Late last year, Katy Perry faced similar accusations of racism following her geisha-themed performance of the Prism track "Unconditionally" on the American Music Awards. The pop star wore a kimono and danced with backup dancers and taiko drummers dressed in what the New York Daily News described as "cultural garb" on a stage adorned with cherry blossoms and a Shinto shrine. She, too, scoffed at the controversy, saying, "Geishas are basically, like, the masters of loving unconditionally."

In 2004, No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani defended herself against accusations of racism when she featured "Harajuku Girls" in several videos around the release of her Love. Angel. Music. Baby. solo album. At the time, comedian Margaret Cho called her performances a "minstrel show."

''She didn't do her research,'' Stefani told Entertainment Weekly. ''The truth is that I basically was saying how great that culture is. It pisses me off that [Cho] would not do the research and then talk out like that. It's just so embarrassing for her. The Harajuku Girls is an art project. It's fun.'' Moreover, Stefani said she was "surprised how racist everybody was" about the women themselves. ''Everybody's making jokes about Japanese girls and the stereotypes," she said. "I had no idea [I'd be] walking into that.''

Lavigne's eponymous fifth album was released last year.

spacers work as designed and are lightwieght. not too thick to yield heave problems.
- Dirkdaddy "Dirkdaddy"

My Cragar Soft 8 wheels on 5x5 bolt try out will not sit flush with these spacers. They are too narrow on the wheel side, causing the wheel to tilt abstractedly to one side- treacherous, make sure this doesn't take place to you too. I didn't know it was happening in anticipation of a mechanic saw it. I'm assuming the external diameter is this small since it held to work for both 4.5 and 5" bolt patterns. This may also be caused by too much slop with the jewelry allowing the spacer to get off crucial top. Any way, they must have made point spacers for each size.I'm ordering a in tears else and not pouring my car in anticipation of I get it.You may not have this come forth depending on your wheels.

Game of Thrones season 4 episode 2 sees fans jubilant over King Joffrey's ...

*Spoilers everywhere*

Joffrey Baratheon, very possibly the most hated man in Westeros, met an untimely end at his own wedding where he was poisoned by an unknown assailant, coughing and spluttering to death in the arms of Cersai Lannister.

Video: Fans react to the Purple Wedding - "Let him choke! Let him choke! Die!"

The King's mauve cheeks led to the scene being dubbed the 'Purple Wedding', a follow-up to season 3's rather more sanguine Red Wedding, which saw three Starks bumped off by the Lannisters.

Most fans were delighted by Joffrey's departure, with one tweeting: "For once, Game of Thrones has caused me happy tears instead of sad ones."

Another wrote: "I just watched Joffery die ... Then watched it again, and again, and again ... Best Sunday ever."

Feds move in on Nevada rancher's herd over illegal grazing

For 20 years, a tough-as-leather Nevada rancher and the federal government have been locked in a bitter range war over cattle grazing rights.

This weekend the confrontation got worse, when the feds hired contract cowboys to start seizing Cliven Bundy's cattle, which have been grazing on public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The government officials brought a show of force that included dozens of armed agents in SUVs and helicopters.

Bundy, 67, who has been a rancher all his life, accuses BLM of stampeding over on his rights.

This is a lot bigger deal than just my cows, Bundy told FoxNews.com. Its a statement for freedom and liberty and the Constitution.

The fight involves a 600,000-acre area under BLM control called Gold Butte, near the Utah border. The vast and rugged land is the habitat of the protected desert tortoise, and the land has been off-limits for cattle since 1998. Five years before that, when grazing was legal, Bundy stopped paying federal fees for the right.

For more than two decades, cattle have been grazed illegally on public lands in northeast Clark County, the BLM said in a statement. BLM and (the National Park Service) have made repeated attempts to resolve this matter administratively and judicially. Impoundment of cattle illegally grazing on public lands is an option of last resort.

But Bundy said he has grazed cattle on the land for decades, and his father and father's father did long before his 1,000 cattle roamed the area. He has long defied orders from bureaucrats he says are bent on running him out of business.

Just before the round-up began this weekend, Bundy said federal agents surrounded his 150-acre ranch. His son was arrested on Sunday in an incident involving the agents.

Theyve been bringing men in and equipment and setting up a compound, Bundy told FoxNews.com Monday. They got helicopters flying low. They got snipers around the ranch. Our access to public lands has been blocked.

Were not pointing guns at anyone but were sure getting a lot of guns pointed at us.

- Carol Bundy, wife of Nevada rancher

Bundy said he is worried BLM might try to turn the situation into another Waco or Ruby Ridge.

Yeah, theres a little fear in me, Bundy said. Theyre definitely set up to do that.

Federal officials said BLM enforcement agents were dispatched in response to statementsBundymade that the agency perceived asthreats.

When threats are made that could jeopardize the safety of the American people, the contractors and our personnel; we have the responsibility to provide law enforcement to account for their safety, National Park Service spokeswomanChristie Vanover told reporters Sunday.

Bundy, who does not have an attorney, spoke to FoxNews.com from Las Vegas, where he had gone early Monday morning to ask Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie for help. Last week, Gillespie told theLas Vegas Review-Journal that neither Bundy nor the BLM should resort to violence.

No drop of human blood is worth spilling over any cow, Gillespie said.

Back at the ranch, Bundy's wife Carol said she and herhusband were not looking for trouble.

Were not pointing guns at anyone, but were sure getting a lot of guns pointed at us, she said.

The trouble started when Bundy stopped paying grazing fees in 1993. He said he didn't have to because his Mormon ancestors worked the land since the 1880s, givinghim rights to the land.

We own this land, he said, not the feds. He said he is willing to pay grazing fees but only to Clark County, not BLM.

Years ago, I used to have 52 neighboring ranchers, he said. Im the last man standing. How come? Because BLM regulated these people off the land and out of business.

He said he wont let the feds dothat to him.

I said, No. Then, Hell, no, he said.

BLM said in a statementtwo judgesordered Bundy to remove his cattle from Gold Butte. The Center for Biological Diversity, an environmental group, said the federal action waslong overdue.

Despite having no legal right to do so, cattle from Bundys ranch have continued to graze throughout the Gold Butte area, competing with tortoises for food, hindering the ability of plants to recover from extensive wildfires, trampling rare plants, damaging ancient American Indian cultural sites and threatening the safety of recreationists, Rob Mrowka, a spokesman for the group, said in a statement.

Merle Haggard Receives ACM Crystal Milestone Award on His Birthday

The ACM Awards gave Merle Haggard a birthday hell never forget. The former Entertainer of the Year and legendary hitmaker received the Crystal Milestone Award, which signifies outstanding achievement in the music industry.

Some of country musics biggest stars were on hand to pay homage to Haggard, starting with Garth Brooks, who introduced the tribute segment. Growing up, my dads favorite artist quickly became my favorite artist, Brooks said, explaining how he became a Haggard fan early in his life. Brooks called Haggard a one-of-a-kind creative force.

After George Strait and Miranda Lambert followed with a medley of Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down and Haggards first No. 1 hit, Im a Lonesome Fugitive, the 77-year-old singer took the stage while the crowd serenaded him with Happy Birthday.

He kept his speech short and to the point, telling the audience, Country musics been great to me all my life, and its great again tonight. Thanks everybody for their participation in one of my most eventful evenings. Thank you.

Haggard won Male Vocalist of the Year six times, more than anyone in ACM history. In 1971, he won the academys first-ever Entertainer of the Year award.

Cara Delevingne, Michelle Rodriguez heat up Cancun, bash the paps

Cara Delevingne and Michelle Rodriguez were caught smooching on land and cavorting in the water during a week-long Cancun vacation that ended Sunday, and now the Victoria's Secret model doesn't seem thrilled that pictures and video of their getaway have surfaced online.

On Monday, she took to Twitter to rant, first going off about the importance of ignoring other people's opinions. She capped that by saying, "[Y]ou have no idea how valuable privacy is until you loose it!!!"

A few hours later, she went off about paparazzi.

"How many people have to get hurt or even killed to realise that it's not right?," the model said in a series of tweets. "It scares me because they act like they're assassins with there telescope lenses, hiding in bushes or whatever they can find. Ha I actually used to feel so sorry for them, how boring it must be to follow people around all the time but some of them actually enjoy it."

"Rant done!! Needed to get that off my chest for a while! Also, I have never once seen a woman pap! Can someone explain that!?"

The photos show the 21-year-old British model and 35-year-old "Fast and Furious" actress in intimate situations on a Cancun patio. And, calling it confirmation that the two were really a "couple" couple, TMZ posted video of the two looking as if they were having a really good time in the waves, with Delevingne going topless.

Rodriguez and Delevingne haven't exactly been keeping their outings quiet since they started hanging out in January -- though Rodriguez's rep denied a February story in the Mirror that had the actress confirming a relationship, saying her client hadn't talked to the British paper.

The couple first cornered the gossip world's attention at a New York Knicks game in early January where they behaved very much like girlfriend and girlfriend, with Rodriguez reportedly getting sloshed.

"Cara had to take Michelle's drink away from her during the second half of the game," an observer told Us Weekly at the time. "Michelle was so sloppy, it was embarrassing to watch."

Since then they've been photographed out together frequently.

Rodriguez in October stated that while she's not gay, she has no problem hooking up with men or women.

"I've gone both ways. I do as I please. I am too ... curious to sit here and not try when I can," she told Entertainment Weekly. "Men are intriguing. So are chicks."
